Debarag Banerjee
Debarag Banerjee is an entrepreneurial AI/ML expert with a PhD in AI from Stanford University. With a zero-to-one mindset, he has established a data/applied science and engineering organization that delivers AI/ML solutions, including Generative AI-enabled apps, along with aligned tools and processes for businesses to achieve sustained profitable growth.
At MachinAnimus, Debarag helps enterprises excel in AI by building AI products that increase their enterprise value. Notably, he developed an enterprise-class chatbot based on LLM and NLP for a multi-billion dollar networking company. This chatbot enabled product support automation, resulting in approximately 15% reduction in customer support time.
During his tenure as the Global Head of DS & AI at Agoda, an online travel agency (OTA), Debarag’s team achieved significant breakthroughs across more than 20 projects. These projects covered various domains such as GenAI, Pricing, Personalization, Content, Marketing, Search Ranking, Chatbots, Fraud Detection, NLP, Image AI, and Time Series Prediction. Leading a team of 49 data/applied scientists, he successfully leveraged AI/ML to drive over 20% increase in bookings.
As the VP Head of AI & DS at Flipkart’s Myntra fashion e-commerce unit, Debarag brought about a transformation in fashion design through the application of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) and Neural Style Transfer. By utilizing these AI techniques, he enabled the auto-generation of fast-trending designs for AI-designed private labels. This innovation resulted in a reduction of the time-to-market by 3-4 months per trend and a remarkable 66% higher gross margin.
At Jio, Debarag accomplished an extraordinary feat by achieving a record-breaking growth rate of 0 to 137 million mobile subscribers in just seven months. To support this unprecedented growth, he spearheaded the development of a petabyte+ scale Network DS platform, leading a team of 35 data scientists, 100 data engineers, and a product team. This platform powered over 200 AI and BI applications, supporting more than 3,000 users and optimizing a network with over 1 million wireless units.
During his tenure at TEOCO, Debarag held a leadership role in the Product Management organization of an AI-based 4G/5G network optimization company. Through strategic transformations, he successfully turned around a previously loss-making unit, making it the most profitable growth engine within the company.
As the founder of Avnera and WiViu, two startups, Debarag introduced groundbreaking information theoretic joint-source-channel coding techniques. These techniques pushed the boundaries of quality, range, and congestion/interference mitigation for audio/video streaming. Both startups launched innovative products based on his inventions and were subsequently acquired.
Debarag’s extensive experience as a tech, data science, and product executive allows him to effectively integrate strategy, architecture, technology, innovations, and client expectations into product design. With a profound understanding of ML algorithms, analytical and statistical techniques, big data, deep learning, product design, and team leadership, he consistently delivers fail-safe applied ML solutions. His track record includes successfully delivering transformative solutions across various industries, irrespective of their verticals.
